Visit to Champasak Museum

In March 2008, SPAFA together with the Getty Conservation Institute, the Lerici Foundation, and the Department of Cultural Heritage, Lao PDR, organized an international workshop on “From Risk Assessment to Conservation: Safeguarding Archaeological Complexes in the Mekong Region” at the Vat Phou World Heritage Site in Champasak, Lao PDR. One of the participants is our former CollAsian colleague, Mr.Daophachanh Sayavong, or Dao, from the Vientiane course in December 2007.

News on the Achievements of the CollAsians from Lao PDR

We’d like to congratulate two CollAsians from Lao PDR, Ms.Thongkhoun Soutthivilay and Mr.Bounhueang Bouasisengpaseuth for their works.

Thongkhoun, a participant of the International Course on Preventive Conservation Strategies for Collections in Southeast Asia held in Thailand in 2002 (a CollAsia2010 Pilot course), now the Collections Manager at the Luang Prabang National Museum, has co-founded the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre in Luang Prabang which was opened in July 2007 “to become a centre for learning and exchange on the ethnology and artisanal heritage of Laos that promotes appreciation for the cultures and skills of Laos’ peoples, stimulates investment and preservation of their crafts, and supports their sustainable livelihood development”. Thongkhoun also serves as a co-director of the centre.

Bounhueang, an Officer-in-Charge of the Lao National Museum and a participant of the International Course on Conservation of Southeast Asian Collections in Storage in the Philippines in 2006, just completed a new storage at the Lao National Museum where he puts the knowledge he gained from the course in good use. Bounhueang mentioned to the Vientiane Times that “Warehouses are used to store artifacts and we have learnt that our warehouse needs to be improved, as it isn't up to standard.”, and he just improved it. Congratulations!

2nd Edition of Guidelines for Managing the Integration of Culture into Development Programmes

The 2nd edition of Guidelines has been prepared to supplement the original publication of 2004. Whether viewed as promoting inclusiveness, integration, or advocating the adoption of community-driven approaches, the Guidelines are intended as ‘guide’, not a ‘blue-print’. The Guidelines have evolved from 10 workshops and 2 international conferences held from 2002-2005 that have involved the participation of over 800 persons. Presented in an easy-to use format, the Guidelines are now available for electronic download from the SPAFA Web Site and will be of interest to anyone working in the field of culture and development. Activities from the Guidelines have been successfully adapted and used in the following CollAsia 2010 programmes: the Workshop held in Manila, Philippines, in 2006; the Field Project conducted in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2007; and more recently in the Associate Activity on Making Mangrove an Eco-Musuem, held in Chachoengsao, Thailand, during March 2007.
